In the Simplicity Parenting book, Payne, asks “Do parents act out of a desire to provide for their kids, or a desire to gain a competitive advantage for them?” And scheduling children too early for hobbies and sport activities “can establish a reliance, a favoring of external stimulation over emotional or inner activity. They’ve been programmed to imagine that pleasure depends on toys, and that the next one might be better than the rest. Likewise, a child who doesn’t experience leisure-or better yet, boredom-will always be looking for external stimulation, activity, or entertainment.”

This is a fascinating perspective… and more complex than I originally realized. I’m glad you’re looking into all of this further and have taken on the role of gathering and disseminating information and acting as a guide, too. The idea that strikes me most from this post is that we may need to deny our children their hobbies or passions or pursuits early on to allow them the time and freedom they need and deserve to BE KIDS and to explore many things. Hmmm…. In some ways, to parent less. Very interesting.
