No More Excuses, Move Your Body
If you’re like so many moms, trying to fit in that physical care of your body is a tough one. Our bodies are moving…
- They have to get up in the middle of the night when our baby needs to eat or our child is sick or has had a nightmare.
- They have to get up with our early riser and start breakfast.
- They have to stretch to reach the block or pacifier that fell behind the couch.
- They have to run after our toddler as he runs after the stray dog in the drive way.
- They trip over the collection of rocks our preschooler has collected on our hardwood floor by the front door.
- They ache from sitting at our computer until 1am, blogging and emailing.
Well, you’re right. We are definitely moving our bodies.
At the same time motherhood takes its toll, and that middle roll that emerged after baby #2 is beginning to jiggle while driving the van over the unpaved driveway!
Our emotions are on high gear as mamas because we connect with our children so much through heart-to-heart communication. The best way to clear your head, soothe those back aches, and diminish that roll around the middle is to proactively move your body in a consistent way - walking, running, swimming, jump roping, etc.
I really like Dr. Oz. He recommends to walk for 30 minutes every day - even if there’s a hurricane coming. So, I got creative and I have found a 30 minute time slot between dropping my kindergartner off to catch the bus and taking my preschooler to his destination. I don’t live in a neighbor conducive to walking, so I found one on the way that has a lovely paved path in a forested area between the homes. My 2.5 year old loves the early morning walk in his stroller and I love that it keeps me consistent every day to move my body!

I completely agree that getting exercise helps to clear your head. I started working out regularly back in March. I bought a used elliptical trainer off of Craigslist that I love! I work out at least 5 days a week (3 days on the elliptical and two days strength training) immediately after I put my kids to bed. If I don’t do it right away, I get sidetracked with all the house work and prep for the next day, or sit down and lose my inertia. During August and September I was on a long vacation and then got sick and life got away from me. I just last week started my regular exercise again as I realized how much I need it and how it does help make me a better mom. It also sets a great example to my kids as they know that mommy uses the exercise machine after they go to bed.
